Almost every type of weather is rowing weather. We row in every season, every day of the week. Yet there are times when we can’t or shouldn’t:
When it’s dark: from half an hour after sunset to half an hour before sunrise. Sometimes we do go out on the water in the dark, but only with special permission and only in a steered boat equipped with prescribed lighting.
If it is too cold/freezing: at an air temperature below 2 degrees Celsius for wooden boats and 0 degrees for plastic boats and as long as there is still ice on the Amstel after a period of frost.
In fog, when the small white bridge across Poseidon cannot be seen.
In strong winds, wind force 6 Beaufort or stronger.
During thunderstorms.
During a rowing ban (imposed by Poseidon’s board, the rowing union or the Inland Water Management service), for example during our annual war commemoration at Poseidon on 11 June and during races on the Amstel.
With a boat that has been taken out of service for repairs.
Please note
This is your own responsibility, so don’t blindly trust the information in the rowing app or online. Use your common sense!
For your own safety, always wear a brightly coloured/fluorescent shirt or jacket for optimal visibility to other rowers and motorboats.
